Make your WordPress comments more user friendly with a mini TinyMCE editor

| December 30, 2007 | 16 Comments

WordPress comment boxes tend to be dry, text editors. That’s kind of ok for people who know HTML, but even I get frustrated when I want to add a link in someone else’s comment box.

Here’s a really easy and pretty solution: Advanced TinyMCE Editor. This editor add a simple yet useful toolbar to the top of the comment box with the following buttons: bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, undo, redo, add link, remove link, and view HTML. To see it in action, go to the comments section at the end of this post – I’ve implemented it here on WordPressGarage.

Update March 10, 2008: I have disabled this plugin because a user notified me that it was causing Safari to crash. Oh well.

woops.  spoke too soon.  do you have ideas about what might be preventing the editor toolbar fom showing up in comments in the deliciously blue theme?  it works just fine as far as writing posts goes, so i know i have it installed correctly, but it’s not showing up in the comments.

Julian – what is the deliciously blue theme? Can you send me a link to your site or to the theme?

i have downloaded this plugin and it is successfully showing me toolbars inside "write post". But how to show toolbars on comment box ? just like you have designed. Nothing has mentioned in the above link to activate toolsbars on comment box.

    please guide.

Very interesting … I like the popup html editor.  Do you know if it’s possible to disable the text area from grabbing the tab key?  I like being able to type my comment and then tab over to the submit button without needing the mouse.  I have no idea how many people do the same, but without data, I tend to avoid things that annoy me.

Julian – I really don’t know why it’s not showing up, and you’re not the only one having problems with it. I think I’m going to test it out on some of my other blogs to see if it works there. If it doesn’t, it will give me a clue as to why you are having problems.

Hi Forrest – welcome to WordPressGarage! I didn’t realize that the box picks up tabbing, and I really don’t know how one would go about getting it to allow you to tab onwards. Sorry.

I suggest to both of you that if you have problems with the plugin to try to contact the plugin’s creator.

Everyone, I just realized what the problem is!! I linked to the wrong TinyMCE plugin – I linked to the one that extends your WYSIWYG editor for writing posts, but not the one that adds the toolbar to your comments. Here’s the correct link, and I’m correcting it above too:

does the reply feature work, though?

    <i>thanks!</i>

this really looks cool and appealing…will try it out

  14. Miriam Schwab says:

Hi mrugesh – this plugin isn’t related to the toolbar to the regular text editor on the Write Post page. That toolbar appears when you select to use the WYSIWYG editor under your User preferences. For me, all I had to do was activate the plugin and it worked. Maybe it’s dependent on the version of WordPress that you’re using, or your theme’s comment file.
