Hello Dolly WordPress plugin with a new and darker twist
We all know (and love or hate) the Hello Dolly plugin that comes bundled with every WordPress installation. In case you aren’t familiar with Hello Dolly, it places snippets of lyrics from the songs in the Hello Dolly movie in the corner of your admin.
While I don’t actually ever activate this plugin, as a huge fan of the movie I can understand the motivation behind making sure everyone has access to the brilliant lyrics in the songs. I mean, how can you beat this scene from the movie:
Wave your little hand and whisper so long deary,
Should have said so long so long ago,
And baby when your nights are weary,
Don’t you come a-knocking at my door.Cause I’ll be all dolled up and singing this song that says
You dog, I told you so–oo… etc.
The best. “And on those cold winter nights, Horace…you can snuggle up to your cash register…it’s a little lumpy, but it rings.” And it has Louis in it.
Ok, enough.
Anyway, for those of you who don’t love Hello Dolly (gasp), and gravitate towards darker, bleaker forms of art, a new variation of the plugin has been created by The Art of Darkness that displays a random line from Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven.” I actually do love most of Poe’s stuff, but it’s pretty disturbing and isn’t the kind of literature I’d love to have popping up all day. But I guess with a blog named “The Art of Darkness,” the people over there go for this kind of thing. So if you do too, here’s the link:
And now, for those of you who do love Hello Dolly:

“Wonderful Woman!” (Horace at the end of the movie)

Yeah…it’s best to imagine the blog being read aloud by Vincent Price.
Thanks for the link!
Cobwebs – even your handle matches your blog theme! You’re very welcome.
Hi, I found this page through a google search. I want something like a hello dolly plugin, only where it actually appears on your website, rather than in the administration part of the site. for example in your site where it says “WordPress plugins, themes, tips and hacks” it would randomly display a line. I don’t care if it’s a random line from hello dolly, or from anything, I know how to edit the lines, but I don’t know how to change the plugin so it makes the line appear on the website for all users.
Any help would be great, thanks.
Mike
Mike – It sounds like you need a widget which displays random pieces of text. Perhaps have a look through the WP plugins repository. There is bound to be something in there which can do that, then you would just need to modify the chunks of text rather than reprogram the plugin.
I would much rather see a plugin “best quotes of all time” than something so odd as this
