I recently updated a theme and all of my customizations were stripped away. I'm pretty new to wp so when I heard about child themes and all the good that they could do naturally I wanted to know the cons as well. Right now I confused, maybe I should not update my themes at all or at least until I learn a little more about how stuff works. Thanks for the advice, it has been really helpfull.

Wampsever would not open. I run Windows 7 and ran the 32 bit and the 64 bit although I am 64 bit duel core. I even tried th xammp. that did work but could never get wordpress to load to the data base I created. kept saying password and user name ok but cant acess database. I had prvilages granted to my sql and the new database and yes it was created correctly. this whole thing is not even worth it. Nothng works. I put everything in the wordpress directory correct (sample folder) So who had any ideas as I a m out of them. I uninstalled everything until someone comes up with a step by step with troubleshooting ideas that a layman can understand. I simply want this on my desktop so I can learn wordpress before going live with it on a website. I am done here unless someone can walk me through ALL troubleshooting techniques.

Ok here is my solution to the pagination issue, I just stumble upon it here:
http://wpquestions.com/question/show/id/1790
Instead of

<?php query_posts('category_name=special_cat&showposts=10'); ?>

Make it
<?php $paged = (get_query_var('paged')) ? get_query_var('paged') : 1; query_posts('posts_per_page=10&cat=8&paged='.$paged); ?>
